I can't believe my sister failed to know how many episodes of Firefly Kristina Kendricks was in. For shame.

The rights to Firefly are owned by Fox, always have been. Fox is evil, and will hold on to it JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN.

I noticed a few things in this podcast that I should address: I misspoke when I described the Protheans in Mass Effect - they aren't "Gods", they were an advanced, ancient civilization that created the "mass effect relays" that allow for space travel and left remnants of their technology across the universe after they were wiped out by the reapers. There is an alien race, the hanar, that refer to the protheans as the "enkindlers" who, to them, are the creators of the universe. Yeah, I totally nerded out there.

On the subject of Capcom and other Japanese developers: First of all, I really think we should stop claiming that publishers/developers are just "in it for the money" or "just want your money." Of course they want money - they're a business. I think what would be more fair would be to call out developers/publishers that do things that make it obvious they're more concerned about money than the art (Mass Effect 3 and Street Fighter X Tekken probably apply). Every artist wants to make money on their art, but when you start kowtowing in order to make more sales, or because it's the "hip" thing to do, that's when you take the "art" out of the equation. Furthermore, there are plenty of developers, even one's that make games for major gaming publishers, that honestly care about the products they create, including Capcom. Now, in terms of Capcom and Japanese developers, it is painfully obvious that they can't make the sales that they used to in the Western market. There are multiple reasons for this, but one of them deals with Japanese developers trying to make games that will be more appealing to a Western audience but going about it the wrong way because they don't really understand the global gaming market. Recently, Capcom has turned into one of those companies, and the creator of Mega Man called them out on it. He has since left Capcom. SquareEnix is also going through these issues, as well, and probably on a worse level than Capcom. Honestly, the only Japanese developer that's really worth a damn anymore is Atlus and possibly Konami. As a fan of Japanese games, this saddens me.

I used to be a huge Capcom fan, but they haven't put out quality games like they have in the past. Every once in awhile they'll put out a good Street Fighter game (despite the gripes over the on-disc DLC and gem-system, Street Fighter X Tekken is actually pretty good) or Resident Evil game (Revelations is the most current example). The Dead Rising games were pretty good, though.

Oh, and one more thing: Yes, Capcom does have an American branch. However, the games are made in Japan by Japanese developers. The branches do talk to one another, but Capcom Japan has the final say and Capcom America really just does the localization for the games and advertising.

Boom, facial.

i really like the game personally the game as a whole was very, mediocre. but when you break it up into parts i really like it. the storyline though confusing at first is very interesting, if one took the time to read the datalog as it filled up they would understand the story much much better. I did infact read hte datalog which greatly expanded my knowledge of the characters and objects in the game. The battle though dull in button play is very flowing and graphicaly beautiful. Another aspect of the battle system i liked is the break away from the same old tank,DPS,support main stay that has been in almost every FF game. The linearity really bugs me but i do like that after the game is over you can go back and complete all the missions and stuff which is nice i like that. Also a cool thing is that you can gauge your sucess in the game by how fast you can beat the boss because you can fight him over and over. over all i loved the game and with a few tweaks i think this could have been an amazing title -more amazing than it was-.

Q: Do nudists get turned on by seeing the other naked people?
A: Depends on the situation. The wife clipping her toenails in the buff? Not a turn on. Beach volleyball on a nude beach? Not generally a turn on, either. The same wife sashaying up to me nude with that look in her eyes? Hell of a turn on.

Q: Is it acceptable?
A: Mu. Or, to use a couple more words: Is what acceptable? To whom?

Sprouting a boner on a nude beach, to take one possible interpretation, is not acceptable, which really should go without saying.

The whole point is tantalizingly hinted at in the two picture captions, but our dear author, like the Seinfeld writing team, sadly seems to fail at actually getting it: Nudity isn't sexy per se. And it really isn't required to be so except by your own culturally colored expectations. When your culture consistently links nudity and eroticism to the point that a bed room with the lights out and one man and one woman engaged in procreation is the only acceptable situation for nudity (to somewhat overstate the case), then sure, you'll think "sexy" every time you see nudity. And you're disappointed when you learn, as Jerry and his girlfriend did, that the two are not actually the same at all.

But that's hardly the fault of nudity and more of the fucked up expectations and hangups surrounding it.

So, to keep it direct, I say: Take your hangups and shove'em. Or at least have the intestinal fortitude to examine them and to recognize them for what they are instead of projecting them on everyone else.

I'm currently playing through XIII-2, and so far I really like it. Yeah, time traveling stories can be fairly hackneyed, but I really dig the Paradox system in XIII-2. I'm a sucker for being able to replay sections of a game to change the outcome and obtain multiple endings, kind of like Chrono Trigger or Chrono Chross. And, as a fan of the Shin Megami Tensai series, I absolutely love monster collecting.

A steampunk Final Fantasy would be awesome. I think the closest there's been to a steampunk FF title was FFVI, but I guess you could say most FF games have some steampunk elements.

I liked XIII. I would have liked a more steampunk atmosphere a SHIT TON better... as is though I did indeed spend over 60 hours on the game. The second one was better.

I'm with ya, man. DLC is, for the most part, a complete waste of money. I've found some exceptions (Rockstar's games, mostly, but then again I'm a huge fan and more than a little biased), but not many. I mean, having more content to play with in a game is typically a good thing, but most of this crap they could have just had in the game in the first place. I think if DLC added a few more hours of content it could be worth getting, but it has to be damn good in order for that to work. Most of the time that's not the case, like with Borderlands (though I've heard some of the DLC missions aren't bad).

Steam's sales are fantastic. I've spent probably too much money over the past year, but now I have a hefty PC game library and won't need to purchase anything new for quite a long time. I'm a hybrid PC/console gamer, so there are only certain titles that I buy on PC anyway (some FPS, RTS, Adventure, Puzzle and Indie games).

I've yet to play Uncharted 3 (it's on my list), but I'm a huge fan of the series. I'll be getting a Vita next week to review for the site and talk about on the podcast, so I'll have a copy of the Uncharted game on the Vita to tide me over until I get around to playing Uncharted 3. I've heard some good things about it, but supposedly the story isn't as good as Uncharted 2. I don't know, though. I'll find out soon enough.

Note that I mentioned that it will only hold up for lifelong fans of the Final Fantasy series, such as myself and other old-school JRPG fans. There are plenty of JRPG fans that didn't become interested in the genre until the PS1 and PS2 eras, and for them the NES Final Fantasy would probably feel very dated. I'm sure there are exceptions, though.

I for one do not like dlc. I really don't like the idea of dangling a carrot in front of my face after I purchase a title. I think the last game I did dlc with was borderlands, when they had that undead expansion, but it wasn't worth a shit. What? some corny jokes or some repetitive quests with different skinned monsters and npc? I'm not saying borderlands was a really story driven game, but shit man I really liked it and was looking forward to playing more.

On the other hand, I've become quite spoiled with voice acting, and when I play a game without it I feel like I'm not getting the same experience. The Uncharted franchise for instance was better than a lot of the Hollywood productions I've seen in recent years, and worth every penny upon release.

I for one WILL spend 60 dollars on a game, but not on a whim, which is why I'm quite happy with Steam's periodic weekend sales. The flip side to Steam however is that if I really want to take advantage of the discounts on new games, I constantly have to update my computer. Needless to say, I've missed many titles.

The most unfortunate thing, in my case, about banning second hand games is that if I continue to play console games I'll be forced to purchase games from Square, Bethesda, Bioware, and the occasional EA game. I doubt I'll ever play another basketball, college football, racing, fighting, music, party, or shooter game, even though I really enjoy all of those genre I simply don't have the disposable income to spend top dollar on anything but those games I'm guaranteed to play for at least 50 to 60 hours.

Thanks Christina.

What? some corny jokes or some repetitive quests with different skinned monsters and npc? I’m not saying borderlands was a really story driven game, but shit man I really liked it and was looking forward to playing more.

On the other hand, I’ve become quite spoiled with voice acting, and when I play a game without it I feel like I’m not getting the same experience. The Uncharted franchise for instance was better than a lot of the Hollywood productions I’ve seen in recent years, and worth every penny upon release.

I for one WILL spend 60 dollars on a game, but not on a whim, which is why I’m quite happy with Steam’s periodic weekend sales. The flip side to Steam however is that if I really want to take advantage of the discounts on new games, I constantly have to update my computer. Needless to say, I’ve missed many titles.

The most unfortunate thing, in my case, about banning second hand games is that if I continue to play console games I’ll be forced to purchase games from Square, Bethesda, Bioware, and the occasional EA game. I doubt I’ll ever play another basketball, college football, racing, fighting, music, party, or shooter game, even though I really enjoy all of those genre I simply don’t have the disposable income to spend top dollar on anything but those games I’m guaranteed to play for at least 50 to 60 hours.

Thanks Christina.

Satire = "the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc."

Sarcasm = "harsh or bitter derision or irony"

Irony = "the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning"

You can't just write something like that and claim it as satire the second it gets criticized. When we recorded this, I was operating on the assumption that he was owning the article, and I was standing behind him for a list of reasons including (but not limited to) the sheer size of his BALLS. Since he tried to pass that off as "satire," it comes off more like he just didn't like the heat from his editorial, which is pretty fucking consistent of a lot of well-read gaming journalists. I can't speak to "Mackel-Roy's" other writings, but if that really was supposed to be satire, it was shitty satire.

I'd frankly rather go on thinking that it was loosely veiled commentary on anti-game sensationalists and that the editor wasn't just covering his weak ass when he claimed "satire" was calling that guy "mother-fucking batman" and welcoming the kid to "the last 2.5 million years of human evolution."

Hey there! I just listened to episode #0049, the bladder one, it was fabulous. You had a couple of interstitial music beds in there. Could you let me know what they are? Especially the "I Don't Give a Fuck" one. I'd like to get the full versions for myself.
Thanks much, and keep Poddin'

From my experience, the source engine doesn't have as many fancy features as say the Unreal engine, but it seems to be way more efficient. At least on my computer, when I'm getting similar effects on both engines, the unreal engine uses up way more power than the source engine.

I think the reason so may people complained about the source update of Half-Life, is that not everyone understands what graphics engines do. Some people seemed to think that moving it over to the source engine would somehow magically update the models and textures and completely overhaul all of the resources in the game. Really, all switching the engine does is changing how the graphics are handled "under the hood," so to speak. While the source engine does include animation systems and whatnot as well, merely switching engines would not take advantage of these features. To do this, the graphics artists would have to go and redo the models manually. Valve never said that they were going to do this, though it may have been unintentionally implied that they would.

Also, this was posted on the GoNintendo blog this week, and is completely relevant to this episode. If nothing else, watch the part at the 3:00 mark. XD http://gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=159484

Wow. I say "fuck" too much. I blame the booze I was drinking throughout the podcast.

There is still plenty the developers can do with Deus Ex after Human Revolution. For one, they could create sequels to Deus Ex and Invisible War. Also, what the hell is wrong with the source engine and using it to update the original Half-Life? The source engine is great, despite the fact Valve loves to put in a few pointless "puzzles" in their games just to show it off.

And finally: DS9 is the best Star Trek series, followed closely by the original series. DS9 was just structured so well and had outstanding characterization. Also, Quark is one of the greatest characters ever. Next Generation was great, I'll agree, but, contrary to what was said on the podcast, a lot of it does not hold up well and the writing is very disjointed in numerous episodes, especially in the first season. And fuck Wesley Crusher.

I have a considerably older gaming machine. A core 2 duo, with 8 gigs of ram and a 512 Nvidia video card, and I have yet to run across a PC game I cant play.

I cant do DX 11 but I have yet to see any game I actually needed DX 11. At this point i think my machine would cost you 300.

The only thing id really be worried about is the motherboard too. Id drop the extra 50-100 for a better MB. But honestly hes right you dont need any more than 8 gigs of ram. Nothing actually requires it, and its just overkill.
------------------------------
I am also suprised in the Diablo III discussion that you didnt get to the cash specific auction house, but I am guessing you got sidetracked. :)
------------------------------
also I am curious about your argument for WoW not releasing membership totals. Their are SOOO many articles with specific numbers over the years regarding their change in memberships. If those numbers arent public where are all these articles?

I am also suprised in the Diablo III discussion that you didnt get to the cash specific auction house, but I am guessing you got sidetracked.
——————————
also I am curious about your argument for WoW not releasing membership totals. Their are SOOO many articles with specific numbers over the years regarding their change in memberships. If those numbers arent public where are all these articles?

Just to follow up on the topic of professional gaming:

One league I forgot to mention is the Evo Championship Series. It's the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, and has recently broken records for online viewership (EVO2K11 was held last week and had over 2 million views on Ustream).

Also, that Angel guy that ran the CPL and CAL sold the company to some private investors in 2008. CAL folded but the CPL is still around and kickin'. I have a feeling the FRAG documentary painted Angel and the CPL as being much worse than they actually are, but so far I haven't found proof either way.

Yeah... I mean, they didn't even have the decency to at least put Mega Man into UMvC3. *sigh* but what can you do?This just adds to the list of reasons of why I prefer Tekken over Street Fighter.

And, uh, awesome? Glad to be the inaugural anything, haha.

Shiggy! Congrats! Yours is the first comment trapped by the spam filter of the fantastically horrible new google apps!

Actually, I can't speak for Tayo, but when I saw the thing about UMvC3, I threw up a little in my mouth. The wizard that is Capcom, who captured my gaming attention in more than one genre growing up, has suddenly been exposed as a crotchety old man behind a curtain of greed and shame shouting "Your Mega-Man is dead! You kids will buy another fighting game and you'll LIKE IT!"

I guess deep down I always knew Capcom was another greedy empire with the economy pressing their financial backs against the wall, but I didn't want to believe it!

Ugh, you guys are so pretentious. Haha just kidding.

Is there anything coming out of Comic-Con that's really gotten your guys' attention? Just wondering. I'm imagining Tayo probably groaned at the announcement of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 like I did.

I actually had that microscope Transformer. He was supposed to be the doctor in the team, though why machines would need a physician is anybody's guess.

As for this obsession people have about making children's programming "educational:" I agree completely with Bird in that the activists and pundits have a far too narrow definition of what's educational. I know from personal experience that Bird is about as loyal and conscientious a person as I have ever met. If the good vs. evil opposition in Transformers helped to instill those qualities in him, then I call that effective education.

On the podcast discussion, I haven't listened to Jordan Jesse Go, but I listen to another show from the network it's on, MBMBAM. Basically, they take questions from their listeners and their listeners send in ridiculous Yahoo! Answers questions and "answer" them. They're pretty hilarious. Just thought I'd share and put in my two cents on the discussion.

Great work, man. Even I have to admit that the Vita looks bitchin' and as long as the software support is there, I might finally stop saying completely hateful things about Sony.

I make no promises about partially-hateful things, though.
