I have to really disagree with vigilante justice. As a law enforcement major, and a hope-to-soon-be police officer, I can say that when people take the law into their own hands, other people get hurt. BAD. People have been executed for minor crimes, because the mob gets a hold of them and decides that they need to die for something that, under our system of justice, they really shouldn’t be killed for. Or situations where the wrong person gets hurt, because the person didn’t bother to look into what was happening. This is the reason we have professional law enforcement. And I’m sorry, the number of “bad” situations is VASTLY outweighed by the situations that are handled professionally and correctly. If you think we have “corrupt” law enforcement, try looking into other countries. I’d also recommend you educate yourself on EXACTLY what your rights are, because, as I’ve seen in my experience, people believe a lot of stuff about what their rights are, and they are dead wrong.

Also, we have a system of justice that DOES work. The fact that we are human and make mistakes is what allows people to slip through the cracks. Take a look at the Bill of Rights. That system WORKS. It’s issues with people not doing their jobs right, and the number of people who are willing to break the law, that causes problems.

Lastly, the idea of my sister with a helicopter scares the living fuck out of me.

I agree that killing is wrong (except in the defense of oneself or others). But I disagree that normal citizens are less capable of handling some aspects of law enforcement. In fact, I would argue that private citizens with the proper education are more capable than professional law enforcement in some cases. They are a resource that has been used to great effect in neighborhood watch programs. Every time a Loss Prevention agent arrests someone in Fred Meyers, he or she is making the same citizen’s arrest any of us has the legal authority to make.

Although I can respect the faith you put in the system’s ability to handle justice, I must disagree with your assessment. I have seen the system work, and have personally been part of a case that put a very bad man in prison (armed robber/rapist). But I have seen the system fail more often than I’ve seen it succeed.

      - I have witnessed people steal and get away with it simply because no one stopped them (in one case the system failed because the store failed to prosecute out of worry about being sued; in another the victim moved out of town and couldn’t be reached, so the thief got away with it).

      - I’ve personally known women who were beaten and raped and refused to prosecute (for various reasons), leaving the scum that did it to do it again.

      - I have had positive interactions with police. I understand it’s a tough job. But there were several times I’ve went to police for help and they were at best apathetic. I saw a cop in a convenience store one time and ran to him for help in breaking up an episode of domestic violence where a friend’s boyfriend was hitting her and even put a cigarette out in her face right behind the store. You know what he told me? “Not my jurisdiction.” And then he had the balls to continue his shopping without even offering to contact the people whose jurisdiction it was. I sincerely hope you become a better officer than he was. The hard part will be to stay that way.

Are lynch mobs the way to go? Of course not. But I firmly believe that the right people can be more effective in handling justice than the over-encumbered and apathetic system we have now.
