I disagree a bit on “No Homo” being inoffensive. Depending on how it is used, if goes from mocking extreme homophobia to ridiculing a specific sexual minority. We can’t even stand behind the standard fall-back used to justify the phrase “That’s so gay” (”We mean stupid, not homosexual”). I can justify that because “gay” has changed meaning before and its latest transformation is a natural progression of language. But “No Homo” specifically relies on male homosexuality for its humor and it’s kind of irresponsible to treat it flippantly.
It would be stupid for me to get upset at some Irish stereotype because there is no real effort to suppress Irish history or whatever the hell would be dubbed an Irish-American lifestyle. But even in our liberal states, there are people actively suppressing sexual minority lifestyles. It’s easy to see where offense might be taken.
Note that I didn’t say we should avoid saying it at all. I’ll poke fun at the ignorance of extreme homophobia even more than the rest of us, but a little sympathy for those who misread it as insulting their lifestyle isn’t really too much to ask.
